Meet the Doctors

Dr. Mekelburg  

Kirsten Mekelburg, MD, FAAP
Dr. Kirsten Mekelburg is a board certified pediatrician and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She earned her bachelor's degree in environmental science at the University of Michigan and completed medical school at Wayne State University of Medicine in Detroit , Michigan . She did her residency at Emory University where she earned multiple awards in her teaching of medical students. While there, she also published an abstract on the use of umbilical cord blood cell transplants for a rare pediatric disease. With her interest in obesity, Dr. Mekelburg is on the steering committee for the state of Georgia , American Academy of Pediatrics task force on obesity. She is also a member of the Young Physicians committee on gastroenterology and nutrition. She is also a member of the Obesity Action Network. She also teaches pregnant moms on routine newborn care at some of the Ob/Gyn offices in Atlanta . Dr. Mekelburg is originally from southern Ontario , Canada . She moved with her family to Michigan in High School. She is a huge Big Ten football fan and makes as many home games as possible. She plays classical piano in her spare time and is a founding member of the Piano Orphanage Program which will provide piano instruction to permanent wards of the state. Dr. Mekelburg currently resides in the Atlanta area with her husband. They recently welcomed the birth of their first daughter (Sarah).

Dr. Segal  

Julie Segal, MD, FAAP
Dr. Segal is board certified in Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is originally from New England but came south to Atlanta to attend college. She completed both her undergraduate and medical school training at Emory University in Atlanta . Dr. Segal completed her residency training at St. Louis Children's Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis , Missouri . She decided to further her training there by completing a clinical fellowship in Adolescent Medicine. She is a member of the Georgia American Academy of Pediatrics and is on the Georgia State Task Force on pediatric obesity. She is also a member of the Obesity Action Network. She is an active staff member at both Northside Hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite where she also is a part time member of the pediatric hospitalist service. She is a lecturer on newborn care and breastfeeding at the local BabiesRUs. She was previously in private practice in Cobb and Alpharetta before she and Dr Mekelburg opened the Children's Wellness Center . She is married to a physician and they reside in Atlanta. They have recently welcomed their second daughter. Dr Segal was recently selected by Similac brands to be a national spokesperson and the only physician member of the Similac Mom’s Alliance. Dr. Bussey  

Margaret Bussey, MD, FAAP
Dr. Bussey is board certified in pediatrics and A Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Originally from California, she completed her undergraduate studies at University of California at Berkeley, and then traveled south for medical school to Tulane and then east for pediatric residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. After residency she joined the faculty at University of Maryland as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics where she worked in the Pediatric Emergency Department for three years while her husband was completing his surgical residency. Since then she has been in primary care, initially in Rhode Island, then Alpharetta, and now with the Children’s Wellness Center. She is a member of the Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is an active staff member of both Scottish Rite Hospital and Northside Hospital and is on the newborn committee at Northside Hospital. She gives monthly seminars at Babies R Us on basic newborn care and breast feeding as well as teaches a monthly seminar on breast feeding basics at Children’s Wellness Center. Dr. Bussey is married to a pediatric surgeon and has two children. They reside in Dunwoody.

Dr. Loventhal  

Gary Loventhal, MD, FAAP
Dr. Loventhal is a board certified pediatrician and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is an Atlanta native and attended nearby Chamblee High School. He graduated cum laude from Duke University, where he majored in psychology with a special interest in childhood development. He returned to Georgia and graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1997. He completed his residency at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters/Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. While in residency, he presented a grand rounds on "Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Pediatric Asthma." For the past eight years, he has practiced primary care pediatrics in West Cobb, where he specialized in asthma and behavioral pediatrics. In addition, he was the education coordinator, which involved organizing lectures and discussions with Atlanta's top specialists in an effort to practice the highest quality, evidence based medicine. At Wellstar Cobb Hospital, he helped develop protocols for asthma, bronchiolitis, and croup management. Dr. Loventhal is married to Dr. Michal Loventhal a fellow pediatrician, and they are currently the pediatric consultants for Shirley Blumenthal MJCCA in Marietta. They live in Roswell, and are raising three daughters: Ellie, Talia, and Mayah. He stays busy traveling, playing sports, and rooting for his Blue Devils and Braves.
